India is all set to create a record of sorts by coming up with the world’s cheapest laptop which would be available for just $10.

D. Purandeswari, the Minister of State for Human Resource Development made this announcement during the e-Indian Annual Summit of Information and Communications Technologies.

There is an on-going research towards this end in two of the premier institutes of India, the Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai.

The aim of this research and project is to develop laptops especially for the use of the students. These laptops would also help solve the low computer literacy and encourage e-learning not only in India but all over the world.

India has already made its mark on the global markets for producing the cheapest car in the world, the “Nano” by the Tata Group. If the laptops would be made available for $10 then this would be another feather in India’s cap, as presently the cheapest laptops available in the world are atleast 10 times more than the one that India is planning to develop.
