Apple has released an update which it says improves communication between the smartphone and wireless networks. On the stands on July 11 - the Apple iPhone 3G started giving problems to some customers - dropped calls and spotty connectivity.

Though Apple has provided a few specifics about what the software update was designed to fix, it has declined to describe the sort of improvements users might expect after installing the update but maintain that it will improve communication with 3G networks.

TRAI’s come one step nearer to abolishing all charges for calls made within India or am i expecting too much.

Well the news is that TRAI allows ISP’s to offer unrestricted Internet telephony services, a move that will boost competition in the domestic long distance segment and lower STD tariffs. Till before this ISPs were not permitted to provide unrestricted Internet Telephony though they have an IP-based infrastructure.

TRAI says that this move will curtail grey market tendencies. Now, to understand how the rates will come down - the STD service providers would be connected to ISPs through publicInternet wherein the two service providers would have mutual agreement for the same. “As various service providers have been given licences in different areas at different periods of time, the Authority feels that keeping the subscriber base as the criteria for deciding the priority of allotment shall be against the level playing field and the principle of equity,” TRAI Chairman Nripendra Misra said in a letter to Telecom Secretary Siddartha Behura.

He said that Department of Telecom (DoT) may consider the auction route for allotment of spectrum in the 800 MHz band (spectrum for CDMA players) with the highest bid received from GSM operators as the reserve price.

This would ensure equity, level playing field and optimal pricing in allotment of CDMA spectrum for 3G services, he added.

The subscriber base of CDMA network of the service provider in any service area is a result of different environment and cannot muster the “test of fairness if it was to become the basis of priority”, TRAI said.

India, is one of the fastest growing telecom markets with over 8 million new subscribers every month, but only a fraction of that number uses their mobiles to access the Internet.

Mobile users in India are generally wary of accessing the Internet through GPRS because of the hefty price they may have to pay to the service provider.

July Systems a telecom company based at Bangalore has found a solution to this problem. Mr. Rajesh Reddy, Cheif Executive of July Systems explains that since most Indian mobile service providers offered GPRS service to even prepaid customers it was just a matter of activating the feature. Refraining from the usage of mobile phones inflight may soon become a thing of the past. Emirates, the Dubai-based Airlines has taken the lead in this innovation which allows passengers to use their mobile phones while in air. Emirates’ Boeing 777-300s are now equipped with this new technology which allows passengers to make calls and SMS text messages en route to their destinations.

The technology developed by AeroMobile was installed by Emirates in its Airbus A340-300 jets in March this year. The technology has been installed in A330-200s, A340-300s, A340-500s and Boeing 777s fleets of the Emirates Airlines. It may not be long before this technological innovation is introduced in other aircraft as well.
